When a young person loves the great outdoors, there is nowhere greater to go than K’gari, or what was formally known as Fraser Island. K’gari means “paradise” in the local Butchulla language, and anyone that has been there knows that it certainly lives up to its name.
Our young person, Jaxon, aged 12 loves fishing, camping, swimming, and the outdoors, making a respite trip to Hervey Bay and K’gari a fantastic opportunity for him to engage with his interests, learn more about our local area, its history and geography, and grow in confidence and independence while having an amazing time.
On our day trip across the island, we learnt all about its history as a logging settlement, including what they were logging, its uses, how they did this and the creative ways in which they got these massive trees off the island and onto the mainland.
We also learnt all about the natural geography of the island, and the immense water basin that lies beneath it. We even got to taste, and then swim in, the crystal clear pristine waters that seep from the island, and form Eli Creek. We also discovered that the water flowing from the island stays the same temperature the whole year round!
Sn incredible surprise was the huge amount of whales migrating north past the island while we were there. There was an endless display of whales leaping, splashing and playing in the waters just off the east coast of the island.
This trip also gave some much needed downtime for Jaxon’s dad and family while Jaxon was busy learning new things, building his confidence and capacity, and having the time of his life!
